On a Navigational Training operation with the No. 14 OTU, King's Hampton took off from RAF Cottesmore but crashed over Bedfordshire shortly after, killing all 4 crew. William had only received his commission less than 2 months before. He was the son of TW King, a Draper, and his wife Lillian. The family lived at 29 Mansfield Road when William was at the school but later moved to Buckinghamshire. His brother JE King was a Pilot Officer attached to a fighter squadron. He survived the war.
