Ft Officer Richard Christopher Sowerbutts 576 Sqn RAFVR (ON 27-31). Killed 3 February 1945 age 31 . As a Pilot of a Lancaster on a mission to bomb Wiesbaden, Sowerbutts crashed in Germany at Krautenbach. Buried Hotton War Cemetery Belgium.
Son of James Barrington Sowerbutts, a Commercial Traveller, and his wife Annie Sowerbutts, of Nottingham. He gained his Corporal rank and Cert A in NHS OTC 1931. Sowerbutts was in the same class as PF Hickling also killed in action.

From The Nottinghamian 1945:
Upon leaving school, Sowerbutts became assistant to the City Lighting superintendant, and took an active part in reviving the Nottingham Gliding Club. In 1935 he took his final gliding course in Germany and was invited as a guest of the German Air Ministry to the Olympic Games in Berlin. In 1936, he became technical assistant to the Royal Aircraft establishment at Farnborough in aero-dynamics and research. He obtained the degree of BSc and Diploma of A.F.R.Ae.S. while at Farnborough. Feeling that his work could be done equally well by an older man, he several times sought permission to join the RAF but was refused; finally he resigned his post in 1943, entered Cranwell, and soon received a commission.
