Flight Officer ET Banks RAF


Flight Officer Edwin Banks. 118 Sdn RAF(ON 31-37) Died 13 March 1941 age 21. Buried Phaleron War Cemetery.
At school Banks was Sergeant in OTC. He won 1935 OTC Camp Prize and the Musketry Prize in 1936 and 1937. He gained Colours for First XV Rugby and First IV Rowing and was a Prefect in 1936. His father had died while he was at school but had been a Marine Engineer. Edwin Banks joined the RAF soon after leaving school, and received a commission at the age of 18 on 20 August 1938. He became a Pilot Officer the following year at RAF Helwen in Egypt. He died crashing into Yannina Lake, Western Greece, where he was finally based, during a solo training flight doing shooting practice.
