Squadron Leader George Roderick Hartwell Black. 77 Sqn RAF(ON 28-30). Killed 15 October 1940 age 27. Buried Barkby Cemetery, Leicestershire.
Black was killed when the plane he was flying crashed in poor weather just short of the runway at RAF Topcliffe, Yorkshire returning from a raid on Politz Oil Refinery in Germany.
Son of George Hartwell Black (Director Printing Works) and Gertrude Black; husband of Vera Kathleen Charlotte Black, of New Barkby.

At school he was a L/Corporal in the OTC. He left to spend a short time at Lancing College, and afterwards joined the RAF Special Reserve. He was later transferred to the RAF., served for two years in Iraq, and became a Squadron Leader. On the outbreak of war he was posted to the training command at Cranwell and was afterwards transferred to bomber command.
He played football and cricket, the former for the Notts Rugby Club and the latter for the Lincolnshire Gentlemen and for service teams. He married , in March(1940), Miss Vera Brown, of Barkby, Leicestershire
